How to use the Returning visitor filter (web channel)?

The Returning visitor filter allows you to branch your automation based on whether the person visiting your website is a first-time or a returning visitor.

Automation now has two channels: Email and Web. The Email channel is used to reach your email subscribers, while the Web channel allows you to engage both email subscribers and non-subcribed website visitors. Subscribed users can move from the Web to the Email channel to continue their journey, but not the other way around.

This article covers an element from the Web channel.

To use this element, you must have Web Connect properly installed on your website. This script is essential for integrating various GetResponse services and enables the transmission of event data via Web Connect, whether through our plugins or your custom implementations.

Properties of the Returning visitor filter in the web channel

How does the filter work

The filter doesn’t need any setup. It checks if the person has been to your site before.

It works for both:

  • Identified contacts (subscribers),
  • Non-subscribed visitors (who are not on your list).

Use cases

Use this filter when you want to:

  • Target returning users with special content, offers, or follow-up actions.
  • Create more tailored workflows by distinguishing between new and returning site visitors.
