# Merge Word

A combination of words referring to custom fields, which can be used for [personalizing your messages](https://www.getresponse.com/help/personalization.html). If merge words are inserted throughout the message, the brackets \[ \[ \] \] must be used, and the word “custom” needs to be followed by an underscore “\_”. Therefore, if you have added the custom fields: industry and company name, your merge words will look like this:  
\[ \[custom\_company\_name\] \] is a leader in \[ \[custom\_industry\] \].
