# How to make use of tags?

Tagging allows you to label anyone in your contact list. Tags in GetResponse work the same way you might know from other services, like WordPress. You can assign any number of tags and use them to build [personalized](https://www.getresponse.com/help/personalization.html) and relevant communication with contacts in your lists.

Tags can have many uses, here are some of the most important facts about tags that you can use in your account:

Difference between custom fields and tags
-----------------------------------------

The key differences between tags and [custom fields](https://www.getresponse.com/help/custom-field.html) are:

* Custom fields can have a value while a tag is a value in itself.
* Your contacts can at some stage view custom fields that have been assigned to them. A tag is always invisible to your contact.
