The practice of writing the email to make the recipient feel that it is more personal and was sent with him or her in mind. This might include addressing your emails to certain subscribers by using merge words that are automatically replaced with custom and predefined fields in the subject and message body, i.e. "Dear John!" instead of "Dear Friend!".
