The Unbelievable Secret of Competition

By Mike Tully

If you're reading this article, you're a
competitor. And if you're a competitor, you can
gain an edge by doing this one, simple thing:

Follow through.

That's it. Just follow through.

When you plan on doing something, follow through.
When you say you're going to do something, follow
through. When the situation calls for you to so
something, follow through.

Does it seems unbelievable that doing this one,
simple, thing can make such a difference? Let me
tell you a story I heard from eminent sports
psychologist Dr. Rob Gilbert:

It seems that Dr. Gilbert, who teaches at
Montclair State University, invited a motivational
speaker to his class one day. The speaker got a
little carried away about the importance of
motivation, and he made this offer:

"I WILL GIVE $100 TO ANY STUDENT IN THIS CLASS
WHO CALLS MY MOTIVATIONAL HOTLINE EVERY DAY FOR
THE NEXT 30 DAYS."

Later that same day, the speaker called Dr. Gilbert.

"How many students in your class?" the speaker
wanted to know.

"About 30," replied Dr. Gilbert.

"So I'm out $3,000 if every single on of them
follows through,"
the speaker lamented.

Dr. Gilbert instantly soothed him. "I wouldn't
worry,"
he said.

Sure enough, the next day a somewhat relieved -
but perplexed - motivational speaker got in touch
with Dr. Gilbert.

"Not one student called," he said.

Isn't that unbelievable?

Even for $100, no student would follow through
with the simple task of calling a motivational
hotline every day for 30 days.

That's where you get your edge. If you follow
through in a world where other people don't, then
you will wind up ahead, whether you're a coach, a
player, a student, whatever.

So if you're a coach, and you're planning to
attend an off-season coaching clinic, then follow
through by doing it. If you're a student and
you're planning on going to attend open gym three
times a week, follow through by doing it. Whatever
you plan to do, then follow through by doing it.
