Destiny
-By Mike Tully
Peerless sports psychologist Dr. Rob Gilbert likes
to tell the story of his study of German.
For four years in high school, Gilbert studied
German. He then studied it for four more years in
college. And at the end of all that time, he did
not speak German.
Then he went to Frankfurt, Germany, to visit a
relative. Within three weeks, he was speaking
German.
Why?
He was hanging around with people who study German.
This principle will work in your life. One key to
your destiny is the people with whom you
associate. If you hang around motivated people,
you will be motivated. If you hang around curious
people, then you will be on a journey of discovery
as well. If you hang around people who are
passionate about volleyball, well, you get the
idea.
This is not a new idea. Back when I went to
school, the teachers used to say, "Birds of a
feather flock together."
But even though the idea is not a new one, it is
powerful nevertheless. And you can see it the
moment you walk into the gym.
For instance, in the minutes before practice
starts, you can usually find three groups of
people. The first group consists of the sharply
focused athletes. They are doing their warmups
correctly. Then there's the middle group, the one
that is KINDA going about their volleyball
business. The final group is in the corner, talking.
It isn't difficult to guess which athletes are
going to come closest to reaching their potential.
The same goes for coaches. During the off-season,
where can the best coaches be found? They are at
the clinics. And what are they doing at the
clinics? They are interacting with the
instructors, or exchanging ideas with other
outstanding coaches..
It isn't difficult to see which coaches will come
closest to reaching their potential.
So, in summary, if you want a glimpse of your
future, take a look at the people with whom you
associate.
