A Plan for the New Year

By Mike Tully

As you begin 2008 and look toward all its
challenges and opportunities, your best
inspiration could come from a 14-year-old Boy
Scout!

His name is Anthony Aldrich, and he was the
subject of a recent article by the Associated
Press. Like hundreds of Boy Scouts all across the
country, Anthony is involved in selling gourmet
popcorn as part of a fundraiser. But any
similarity ends there. When it comes to popcorn
salesmen, no one comes close.

Anthony led the entire nation in sales in 2006,
and was trying to do the same in 2007. By the time
the article was published, just days before the
New Year, he had sold more than $22,000 of the
snack.

Whether you like popcorn or not, Anthony's story
can be a guidepost for you in 2008. Here are three
factors to keep in mind.:

1. Anthony thinks big. It wasn't enough to lead the
nation just once. He wanted to do it again. How
big are your goals? Do you think big? Pick up a
copy of "The Magic of Thinking Big" by David
Schwartz. The bigger you think, the farther you
will go.

2. Anthony backed up his big thinking with a
strategy to match. For example, he sold to
tailgaters at a pro football game in his native
North Carolina. After all, when your goal is to
sell $23,000 worth of popcorn, going door-to-door
just won't do.

3. He kept it simple. There was nothing fancy
about his approach. He knows the product. He keeps
eye contact. For those on a diet, he offers low-cal
popcorn. For those who don't like popcorn at all,
he asks for a donation. Simple stuff. Anyone could
have done it. But only he did.

So in your volleyball program, can you think big?
Can you develop a strategy to match? Can you
identify some simple steps, and then follow them?
Anthony Aldrich did, and he was best in the
nation.
