Why Girls Make Better Barefooters...
"Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority,
it is time to pause and reflect."
--Mark Twain
"An expert is a person who has made all the mistakes
that can be made in a very narrow field."
--Heinrich Heine, German critic and poet
Friend, I think that last quote might be me!
I wanted to see if this would help you. Check out this
"cutie-pa-tutie" working on her back one-foots and back toes.
Let me know what you think.

"Lane,
Great to hear back from you so soon. I don't know if you
remember me or not but I met you down at Pat's house when
you were doing the clinic before the dam to dam.
You gave me a few free tips out on the porch about footin in
reverse. Man did they ever help!
Help topics: Back 1 foots. I am hitting the start every
time on the boom on my feet and about 50% on the long rope
on my feet. I can see the horizon clearly now, good glide?
But maybe the posture is a little off. Got some knee bend,
ankles over the toes, arched back, arms fully extended, eyes
on the horizon, but I don't feel comfortable enough to shift
the weight to the supporting leg. Feels like I'm gonna end
up on my head. What gives?
Thanx for all the help so far! Take care, Jay"
Well there, my barefootin buddy, the good doctor is in! You
need not look any further!
The first thing to check is that you are properly utilizing
the POWER BAND so that the pull is coming from your hips and
not your shoulders. The I will show you how to add RESISTANCE!
Yes, that's right! Resistance is good when it comes from a
good position!
I have already written about the POWER BAND, so I will just
say that you should make sure that you are able to hold a
handle in between you gut and your hip bone by squeezing you
mid section and maintaining you Posture and Glide!
The next thing to do to learn the back one foot is to
separate the "set-up" from the "pick-up!"
Never try to just pick-up or "Hail Mary" the foot into the
air while praying for it to stay up there.
While maintaining your good position at a comfortable back
speed, lean away a little harder so that you butt is closer
to being over your toes than it is to being over your heel.
The key to this is to not deteriorate your good glide,
posture, and POWER BAND !
You are simply leaning away without lowering your head or
eye sight. You should not have to strain any more than you
perfect back position to do this.
The idea is to not let your butt drift over your heel (i.e.
decreasing resistance) while practicing your "set-up!"
The reason that Jay does not feel comfortable enough to move
his handle into the "set-up" position, is that he is
dangerously light (i.e. not enough resistance) and his brain
is right in warning him that he is about to see more stars
than horizon if he moves too much.
The solution, is to get some RIGHTEOUS RESISTANCE!
After you have added some RIGHTEOUS RESISTANCE, start moving
your handle over to the side of your body by putting one hand
into the crack of your butt, and while moving the other lower
towards the water into your gun holster (the same way we do
in tumble turns-see The Footers Edge instructional video )
The importance of moving the handle is to get your hips,
shoulders and handle to move in parallel planes!
If you are doing this correctly, your head is looking down
the "V" coming off the foot you are trying to stand on, you
feel stable because you have learned RIGHTEOUS RESISTANCE,
and your foot that you are going to pick-up in the "pick-up"
phase is very light. If it is not "begging" to come out of
the water, try squeezing your thighs so that your feet are
less than a foot apart, and your free foot is moving towards
the boom while staying on the water.
Once you feel this, practice riding in this position in
complete control for several passes until "YOU OWN" the
"set-up" position. If you have restrained yourself from the
dreaded "Hail Mary" attempt and perfected this position, it
is now time for the "pick-up!"
Practice holding this position while having the boat driver
speed up enough that your foot on the water can easily be
picked up by simply lifting from the hip and knee! The boat
speed will probably have to come up about 3-5 mph from your
previous speed. If you feel unstable, increase your
concentration on a good "set-up" at a slower speed and work
back up when your feel comfortable!
Tips: #1 Use a 2 foot extension on your handle if it does
not put you into the chine spray. #2 Keep the boom higher
than your head when in a good skiing position.
#3 Have the driver ease into your increased speed as you get
closer to a good set-up position. Never go directly to the
speed if you have not mastered RIGHTEOUS RESISTANCE!
#4 Use Puppy Paws first until you are proficient on them!
