    Well well.

Some weeks are good, others are great, then there are the simply fantastic. I would put this week into the latter category. I was fired up after watching Into The Woods about escaping the norms of society and breaking the shackles of the 9 to 5, and the theme continued with You Can't Take It With You, a classic play set in the 1930s, which had a similar detached look on society. Then an invite came in to film the opening ceremony of Pinewood Studios by HM The Queen and HRH The Duke Of Edinburgh. I quickly accepted and headed over to the studio where the Bond films are made. A short film of the event is in post-production.

    Enjoy your week.

You Can't Take It With You

Money, that is. It seems to be a subconscious theme of my chosen entertainment recently. Into The Woods was about escaping the norms of society and a similar thread runs through this Pulitzer prize American comedy.

    ABIGAIL'S PARTY

The heart-stopping moment at the end of Mike Leigh's wonderfully compelling Abigail's Party still has the power to shock and overwhelm, even of those who have seen the play several times.  The seventies' suburban comedy of ill manners, you see, has simply not prepared us for it.

    Oh What a Lovely War

    Octagon Theatre, Bolton

    26 October 2007

The story of Oh What a Lovely War's genesis almost overshadows its reputation as a play - you sometimes get the impression that there are more documentaries about how it was created than actual revivals of the finished piece.

Devised by Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop at Stratford East, the original ground-breaking production redefined attitudes to the First World War.  Using the framework of an old-fashioned end-of-the-pier concert party, famous songs of the period are mixed with comedy sketches, dance routines, fictional dramatisations and extracts from contemporary letters, speeches and sermons.

    The Flags

    Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester

    25 October 2007

If only all new plays were like The Flags, Bridget O'Connor's hilarious black comedy about a pair of self-deluded lifeguards who wish they on Baywatch and not merely "the second worst beach in Ireland".

Sean Penn heads into the wild

I'm just back from a BAFTA screening of Into The Wild with screenwriter and director Sean Penn in attendance along with Emile Hirsch, who plays a starring role. Out in the UK on November 9th, this is a must see film. Based on an incredible true story, the movie has already been released in the United States, and had its European premiere at the RomeFilmFest.
