WHAT'S
ON
THE IMPORTANCE OF
BEING
EARNEST
New Victoria Theatre, Woking til Saturday 31
January and then on tour.
To judge the success of a comedy appears to be
quite a simple thing. One simply has to
ascertain as to whether it made the audience
laugh. Of course the laughter has to be
alongside the players; to laugh at something
usually implies derision. A play should be an
entertainment which, to me, means enthralling
the audience so that they voluntarily listen
and watch attentively. The Importance of Being
Earnest is a play which is so jam-packed full
of witty sayings and still topical truisms that
it can glide along on its own rails. It is a
bit of froth subtitled “a trivial comedy for
serious people” and yet for all its silliness
it’s a play that can still charm me despite
being acquainted with it since I was a teenager
long, long ago.
Christopher Luscombe has directed this touring
production with the lightest of touches and an
invigorating pace. It is a wonderful example of
theatricality at its best and the satirical
nudges at class and snobbishness cause gentle
laughter. This production unashamedly sets out
to entertain and the cast do exactly that
whilst having a whale of a time themselves.
Their exuberance at being blessed with such
witty dialogue, elegant costumes and delightful
sets, is infectious.
Whilst Wendy Craig is heralded in all the
publicity as the star of this production, it
is, as should be, an ensemble effort. Her Lady
Bracknell is a safe, traditional interpretation
and she looks fabulous. However, for me, the
technical brilliance of Andrew Havill’s John
Worthing alongside the measured elegance of
Hattie Ladbury were the memorable performances.
Olivia Darnley as Cecily sparkled beautifully
and Josephine Tewson’s Miss Prism is a joy to
behold. Her look of abject horror on
encountering Lady Bracknell again after
thirty-four years was exquisitely timed.
This production is for those theatre lovers who
want to indulge themselves. For aspiring actors
– many of whom I know read this site – you can
justify this trip out as research in how to
hold a stage within character. For the less
technically minded then just go along and enjoy
yourself.

PUGILIST SPECIALIST (Soho
Theatre)
Fresh from the Edinburgh Festival comes the
only play from this years collection which can
be said to be truly described as new, -
electrically exciting, startlingly brave, and
stunningly acted . It puts to shame the rest of
the festival and most British theatre
today.
Next to Albee's THE GOAT , OR WHO IS SYVIA at
the Almeida, it is way, way ahead of anything
else in London this month.
Four American actors with talent to-die-for
play a team of marines on a suicide mission.
You think you are there. No marines were ever
more scarey. No more balanced yet terrifying
picture of the modern soldier (male and female)
has been seen on a stage. The dialogue is like
bullets, pointed, hard-hitting, on-target, and
unbelieveably fast. Breath in before sitting
down, as you won't want to breath in again for
another hour.

THE GOAT, OR WHO
IS SYLVIA (Almeida
Theatre)
THE GOAT, OR WHO IS SYLVIA, written by Edward
Albee, starring Jonathan Pryce, directed by
Anthony Page.
There are two must-see new plays in London. One
is Edward Albee's THE GOAT, OR WHO IS SYLVIA.
As most will know before taking their seats in
the wonderfully modernised Almeida Theatre, the
play concerns a happily married man who
suddenly finds uncontrollable love for
another, but,in this case, for a goat. To
describe Albee's play as being about
unfaithfulness is like describing his play
WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOLF as a play about a
slight marital tiff. Albee has written a new
masterpiece which will have audiences arguing
for years.
Is true love something which anyone really
understands? Should we be more understanding of
the ridiculous passions which some feel? Should
we all start looking at goats in a new
way?
Jonathan Pryce is one of our best actors, and
if you have seen the other stunning new play
(at the Soho Theatre) then this has to be the
next show on your list - as long as you are
ready for insane passion, insane laughter, and
that you like goats.
