UK Theatre Network - Happy New Year

December 29th, 2006 at 10:37 am

Hi Friend

Still enjoying the Christmas turkey left overs ?

Drinks cabinet stocked for the weekend ?

Well, it's that time of year where the news turns to a reflection on the year behind us, and it's always fun to look back at a year and see how much our own lives have changed and that of others.  So, I've been looking forward to the end of 2006 so that I can ponder, consider, think.......and then plan what the next steps are for 2007.

This time last year, I knew where I wanted to take UK Theatre Network but I had no idea how it was going to evolve. Getting the BAFTA Red Carpet and National Theatre of Scotland exclusives, helped to kick of the year with a bang and being the first to distribute theatre to a podcast was equally exciting.

The next steps were to move to a subscription service in March in order to help support some of the additional production and development costs. It was a difficult but worthwhile transition and it has helped to significantly increase the traffic to the site.

The site had been free for 5 years but it was destined to remain low profile without funding. So, thanks to your support, I was able to fund 3 different crews in Manchester, Edinburgh and London in order to bring some of the top fringe acts to the web, as well as taking out a full back page advert in The Stage to further publicise the network.

So, here we are at the end of 2006, and theatre in general has grown signficantly in profile both online (MySpace and YouTube), on TV (The Play's The Thing and Maria) and Film (History Boys) and there's more to come in 2007.  This can only be good news for theatre as it takes the experience into the homes of the nation and hopefully they will want to experience more on the stages around the UK.  I also have plans in this space and I have already setup a business team to help me tread through the difficult process of ensuring it is as much a financial success as it is a great theatre experience (press members may contact me for exclusives prior to the general press launch in March).

In closing, may I thank everyone for continuing to visit the UK Theatre Network in 2006 and spreading the word. I believe collectively we are making a significant difference in encouraging more people to watch theatre where they are and providing inspiration and encouragement to new and developing talent.

I wish you a Happy New Year to you and your family and I'll see you in 2007.....on a stage or screen, near you !  :-)
