Hello
again Friend
With all the emails,
blogs, social networking messages, newsletters,
magazines, papers, TV, cinema and theatre
commanding your attention, I am humbled
that you have taken the time to read this
newsletter. Thanks. Again.
As ever, a fantastic week in the world of
theatre and film networking is in store for
you. There's theatre from Greenwich
to Glasgow, Jazz in London and Mozart in
Harrogate.

ON for the top ten articles this
week.
As you probably know, I've been in Sundance
Film Festival and as you can imagine, it was a
great experience. The jetlag didn't impact me
much, but I did sleep for 13 hours after I
arrived home, so that helped.
Click
UK FILM REVIEWS or SUNDANCE
BLOGS for more on Sundance. The
winners are all here.
The dramatic winner, Frozen
River is the story of smuggling
illegal immigrants across an iced-up river
New York state....in a car.
Your
imagination should highlight some of
the risks involved in doing that and
the filmmakers play on those
nicely. It's simple in it's
construction with independent actors
and filmmakers keeping the tension of the
story flowing nicely.
The documentary
winner, Trouble The
Water, follows one of the many families
involved in the tragedy of the New Orleans
flooding in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
The U.S. Government failed to protect and to
serve this community. The film points the
finger to President George Bush but it should
shame all Americans as it highlights that
their complacency, processes and jobsworth
culture is what failed here. Sadly, I
think they'll miss the point and think
that appointing a new "time for change"
president, is the only solution. I filmed
the Sundance Q&A for them and it will be on
their website soon.
The BAFTAs are getting ready to rock n' roll
and some of the top
names in show business will be
there. I'll be there with my Cannes buddy
Kevin, ready for some high definition
camera action.
I'm not sure if the Oscars
are going to be held and I haven't booked up
yet, but the press department are still
acting as if it is, so some event will be
taking place.
I was at the Broadcast Live & VideoForum in
Earls Court yesterday and had a great
time. I know more about Avid's film editing
products, filming aerial
shots and the possibilities in setting up
an Internet TV
station or your own DVD
distribution. I couldn't resist
buying my very first clapper board, I've had
synchronisation problems while editing and I
now know how valuable they really are.
I also picked up a great
book on Documentary
Storytelling which will help me
in post-production of Making It In
Hollywood. I've read most of it already
and ironically, it had a chapter on Morgan
Spurlock, who I managed to have a chat
with in a restaurant queue at
Sundance.
Finally, I also spoke to
Staffordshire
University who are offering £100,000 to
make your own film and pick up an MSc in
Digitial Feature Film Production. Whether
you're a writer/director, producer,
cinematopgrapher, editor, composer or sound
designer or recordist, this is a unique
opportunity to learn while making a commericial
film.
Have a great week.
