Dear Friend,
As a part of the Gazette I like to try and keep subscribers
informed about dog related news and stories. Sometimes
I don't do a very good job at keeping up with the news
so I'll make a better effort to do so in the future.
Today I'd like to share two stories with you.
First is of the famed "Dog Whisperer" who is now being
sued over animal cruelty and other charges.
Read the story here:
http://channels.netscape.ca/entertainment/article.adp?id=20060505223209990001
The story basically alleges that Mr. Milan's staff abused the dog
by putting a choke chain on it and forcing it to run on
a treadmill (both things Milan advocates in his consultations)
which resulted in an over heated dog with throat damage.
I've said it once and I'll say it again, training collars are not
good for training most dogs and they are used incorrectly
more often than not.
While Mr. Milan has some decent knowledge about dog behavior,
he is not all that different or better than most people who have
studied dog behavior. Dr. Ian Dunbar comes to mind as a pioneer
in dog behavior and training. A lot of his concepts are being
taught today (including to Mr. Milan) and have changed the
face of raising puppies from a positive standpoint.
My second story is the new Canine Good Citizen resolutions
that are being passed in some states. In my state of Kentucky
for example certain insurance companies are giving dogs
with the CGC a chance. Dogs that were formly on their
restricted lists are also being considered.
To me this is a double edged sword. On one hand you
have a way to possibly get insurance as a Pit Bull owner.
On the other, the Canine Good Citizen is not really
a through test of temperament and the companies
have the right to deny you anyway. Some might
say, well she got the CGC 5 years ago. That doesn't
make her a good dog now.
Sadly, the AKC does not use retesting later in
life to keep the dog "up to date" as far as
temperament goes.
My final thoughts on the CGC ...
Take the test, get your American Pit Bull Terrier
certified and let's help boost the passing breed
numbers through the roof. And, it looks kind of
cool at the end of your dogs name. :o)
Well that does it for this news flash edition
of the Gazette.
Best Regards,
Jason, Angel CGC, Honey, and Patch.
