Dear Friend,
I wanted to share a short story with you about my dog
Angel.
As part of our continuing education credits in dog training
and behavior modification techniques I attend a group
training class twice a week and a master instructor
class once per week with Angel.
Angel is part demo dog, part student, part Pit Bull PR
rep, part big goofy dog that loves to show her personality
to anyone who will watch her.
Last night at class the students, master instructor
and I were outside sitting in the grass with our
dogs and a new student family and their little
dog sat down beside us.
A little boy and his sister took to Angel pretty fast
and the little boy adores her. They sat in the
grass with her while she laid there in a nice down/stay
for them to pet and give treats too and bascially
make over her for the entire an hour and a half.
The little girl asks, "What kind of dog is she?" I reply,
"She's a Pit Bull."
The little girl, who could be no older than 10 says,
"A Pit Bull!" as her eyes get big and she thinks
about it for a moment. Thankfully she followed
that up with, "Well she is very nice and I like
her a lot."
But the incident left me with a tugging in my
stomach.
This little girl is around 10 maybe 11 and she
already has the misinformation about Pit Bulls
instilled in her head. Her parents, thankfully
are not biased and reassured her that not
all Pit Bulls are mean and will bite.
Matter of fact, her puppy, is more dangerous
than Angel. He is a little biting machine and
as far as temperaments go his is on the low
end of poor.
As I walked over to help some other students
I asked the little boy if he could watch Angel
and make sure she didn't get into trouble.
Of course she won't get into trouble but I
wanted him to get involved in the class
and especially with Angel. Leave one kid
with a great impression of a Pit Bull and he
will tell his friends, his teachers, and his
parents will also spread the word.
At the end of class he walks over to me
and asks, "Will Angel be here Saturday?"
I smile and reply, "Yes, she will be here
and she looks forward to seeing you again."
The boy runs off with a huge smile and
yells to his parents, "She'll be here Saturday!"
This is one reason I am involved in therapy
work too. Kids, many of whom don't have great
home lives, relish at having a chance
to hang out with a cool dog that gives them
attention without expecting much from
them.
When you leave and the kids are waving
bye and some kids are upset they can't
take her home, while sad, you come
away with a feeling of doing something
that very few people get a chance to
do.
Make people smile. While some might
think that's corny or sappy. I think it's
worth it's weight in gold and good for
our souls.
As Angel and I continue our visits
and our adventures I will be writing
about them here and on the site.
Thanks for your support and
I look forward to hearing from
you.
Best Regards,
Jason, Angel CGC/CTD, Honey and Patch
