Facts About Pit Bull Training Dear Friend, Today I wanted to take a
moment and share with you a story that will help shed some light on
training . Fact is, training your Pit Bull doesn't have to be hard,
frustrating, or overwhelming. Thought at times I'm sure you have
felt one or all of those were the case. I have too. You can turn
training into a fun, positive, easy practice and get results all by
following the facts below. There's four of them that are universal
and will help you regardsless of previous training you've already
done. Fact #1 - Dogs are animals first. I didn't understand this at
first. It took a little while for me to grasp it. What dogs are
animals first means is, dogs are creatures that have certain needs.
Much like you and I have certain HUMAN needs dogs have certain
animal needs. You and I have to address these animal needs before
we can start to form a relationship with our dogs. Animal needs are
water, food, shelter, and safety. Fact #2 - Dogs are breeds second.
As with animal needs, dogs are certain breeds and through man these
breeds have ingrained in them certain traits that create specific
needs for each dog breed. For example, Pit Bulls are gripping
animals. They love to grab and hold onto tugs and larger animals
(like wild hogs etc...) This is a breed instinct that was bred into
them through their bulldog roots. Jack Russell Terriers for example
will dig and root in the ground because they are terriers who were
bred to go into the earth for game. As Pit Bull guardians (owners)
you and I must fulfill our breeds needs. The most common Pit Bull
traits are, gripping, above average prey drive, everlasting energy,
and intelligence. Fact #3 - Dogs are our friends Third. As people,
we tend to humanize everything around us so we can relate to it
better. We even do this with our cars and other material items. So
it makes sense we would want to do this with our Pit Bulls too.
Right here is where you will find the largest set of problems for
dog owners. Behavior problems are almost always a direct result of
too much "humanizing" and not enough respect for the animal Pit
Bulls are. People baby their dogs so much they become little "fur
kids" instead of animals. Fur kids are fine and dandy IF you
fulfill their animal and breed instincts first. Problems start when
the balance is set off center by too much babying and not enough
exercise, rules, discipline, and fulfilling animal instincts FIRST.
I compare how most people treat their dogs to how people treat
teenagers who are spoiled. They don't earn anything. They get it
for nothing and come to expect it. When they don't get it they
rebell and throw a fit. A Pit Bull that has not received PLENTY of
exercise, hard mental challenges, and a good diet with clean water
is the teenager who gets everything they desire without working for
it. On the other hand, a dog that gets exercise, is given mental
challenges (training is included here) and as a proper diet BEFORE
they get attention, food, water, and respect can be compared to the
13 year old who works all summer to buy their own Playstation 2. --
The Conclusion -- Without proper rules, discipline, and fulfilling
your dogs instincts (both animal and breed) first you are far more
likely to see behavior problems and what some refer to as
stubborness from them. In my book, The Pit Bull Training Handbook I
share some details about how to start raising Pit Bulls correctly
from puppyhood to adulthood. The techniques can be applied to adult
dogs too. If you are interested in having a lifetime of Pit Bull
