New servers and technology mashing causes server outage
Early in the wee hours of Friday morning (17 April) during routine maintenance prior to the Easter Holiday weekend here in Eastern Europe, which officially started Friday afternoon and ends Tuesday morning when everyone returns to work, a new employee of ours made an obviously critical mistake with a misplaced glass of Ice Tea and caused major damage to our File Server.
We spent the whole day Friday scrambling for replacement parts costing now $350 USD and since then have restored the file server to a physically operational state - though not all of our files have been restored from our backups due to complex password protection.
We apologize for any inconvenience this caused those trying to retrieve files and anticipate, after spending our Easter restoring files, that by Tuesday morning everything will be once again fully operational.
However, trying to mash the 2 year old technology with the brand new hot technology caused a lot of unanticipated problems and we spent another $440 in parts to build one screaming server replacement.
For you technoid fans the old server was a 3.0 Ghz AMD Dual Core and the new one is a 2.8 Ghz AMD Quad Core and it screams. In addition, we replaced 2-500 GB Seagate Hard Disk Drives with Three 1-Terabit Seagate Hard Disk Drives :-) putting them into a RAID array and booting from a fourth 80 GB Hard Disk Drive.
Furthermore we added a few other upgrades and tweaks and hoping minus any glasses of iced tea etc. that we will get a few years out of this new box :-)
It is true that a 25 cent glass of misplaced Ice Tea cost us $790 in parts and no telling how much in embarrassment, hours of work restoring as much as we could, and a halt to our Internet Marketing :-S but all is well now and we are now resuming our regularly scheduled programming.

Anti-Virus Hell and Vipre
It all started after an AVG Anti-Virus update that was done on my computer using the auto update feature. I suddenly noticed that software that I wrote myself was deleted from my hard disk drive by AVG claiming it was a virus.
This totally angered me and I knew that the software that I personally wrote had no virus in it. I have had false positives before with AVG, but this was really insane.
In addition, AVG kept deleting the .dat file of my Command & Conquer game that I play with my son, but I have been tolerating that for weeks.
The last straw was that my son's computer would no longer do automatic updates and being the nine year old that he is it would be negligent as our network administrator to ignore the issue and to possibly get our whole network infected via his computer.
So I started looking for a cost effective solution and not one normally known that the hackers and crackers would be picking apart.
I found my solution Vipre and after running the fr/ee trial for awhile I purchased the Home site license which covers all PC's we have with one low cost. For me this means that I can cover six computers with commercial anti-virus for less then $8.50 a year - what a bargain!
I have been running Vipre now for well over a month - it does not claim the software I wrote as a virus and it does not delete my Command & Conquer .dat file making it so that my son and I can now enjoy our game without having to re-install every time we want to play.
In addition, it is a relief to know that all of our computers are being kept safe & secure from viral attacks while having a commercial solution at the same time.
We still use the fr/ee zone alarm as our firewall, but for now and into the foreseeable future our network and my family are going to be Vipre fans for anti-virus protection.
Sincerely,
Joseph Anderson CEO, AECNU Internet
