Hi Friend, Here's a FREE Piano Lesson for YOU!
-
Here's How to Interpret a "Lead Sheet!"
Dear Friend,
The following lesson will show you how to play from a lead sheet.
Remember, the lead sheet provides the melody only, and indicates the harmony above the notes!
Your job as a musician, is to interpret that harmony based on your knowledge of keyboard harmony. It's up to you to make the music "come to life!"
Attached you will find the lead sheet to this very popular romantic song.
I want you to learn it and serenade your significant partner.
The Melody Note is Always on TOP!
Also attached, you will find my beginner-intermediate arrangement with an audio reference of "The Nearness of You!"
Now understand, I arranged the accompaniment to only include a minimum of notes to stay true to the harmony of the song.
It might sound too slow or mechanical, but once your finger muscles have time to memorize the movements, you will be able to incorporate your style.
In other words, put "your stamp" on this classic love song.
The underlying chords tones are in read underneath the melody. The bass line incorporates the root and 5th of the chord when appropriate.
If you practice this song as arranged, it will be easy for you to interpret other lead sheets, because you will finally understand how to do it!
For ease of reading, make sure you print out copies and take them to your keyboard or piano for follow-up reference.
Don't Ignore The Repeat Signs (1st and 2nd Endings)
Remember, when you repeat after the 1st ending and start from the beginning, make sure you SKIP the 1st ending and jump to the 2nd ending to play the song to the end!
