Now, if you haven't as of yet, purchased any of my products, this will give you a "glimpse" into the training you will receive, once you do!
A Piano Player is Only as Good as his or her LEFT Hand!
In music, you probably hear the word "PULSE" being used in place of tempo or timing! I like to use it myself.
The pulse of music is VERY IMPORTANT. And guess what? The pulse of our heart's is also important.
YEP... we all know what happens when the pulse of the human heart doesn't maintain a consistent beat... there's is a serious problem.
Well, this might be a morbid parallel, but it's the truth. If the pulse of music is inconsistent, it becomes irritable to the listener. I don't know why, but we can tolerate (TO A LIMIT), wrong notes. But inconsistent rhythm, will "drive you up a wall!"
And guess where we maintain the pulse when playing the piano? That's right... in our left hand... where the heart is!
Here's My Advice
Try to create bass lines with your left hand, that is appropriate for the song that you're learning to play. That's right... start out with your left hand.
Why?
Because if you can't get the song to flow (specifically the bass), you will never be able to do it when you introduce your right hand!
If You're a Beginner, Focus on Learning Chord Progressions
You see, there are not that many "chord progressions!"
Once you learn your chord progressions, you will start hearing the melodies to songs you already know!
It's alot easier to pick out the melody... then that's when you'll be playing by ear!
If you truly don't want to waste time reading music...
LEARN CHORD PROGRESSIONS!
And, the great thing about it, you can play ANY SONG in ANY KEY you choose!
Okay... Have you ever heard of Ray Charles!
In the late 50's or early 60's, Ray Charles recorded a song entitled, "What'd I Say!"
It is basically a Blues I7-IV7-V7 tune. It uses all Dominant 7th Chords.
Attached you will find an incomplete arrangement of the song in F Major.
For those of you that don't know your chords, here the key:
F7 is spelled: F A C Eb
Bb7 is spelled: Bb D F Ab
C7 is spelled: C E G Bb
Here's the F Major Scale:
Notes
F
G
A
Bb
C
D
E
Scale Steps
I ii iii IV V vi vii Now understand, in contemporary music, you can "borrow" other chord from other keys.
The only dominant 7th chord that is found naturally in the Key of F Major is the C7!
Do you get it! If had told you that a song was based on a ii-V-I progression in F. What chords would you have to know?
If you said, "some kind of G chord and some kind of C chord... and some kind of F chord," you would be correct!
Now, when you print out your sheet, you will hear that the bass line simply "outlines" the dominant chords. First measure bass notes: F C Eb F.
See if you can create your own groove with the pattern. But always remember, if you can't get the left hand to maintain a steady PULSE... the tune will never flow.
