Friend, Here's How to Learn What to Practice!
Friend,
If you've ever wondered how musicians know what to practice?
It's very simple - you concentrate on music style concepts. And the EASIEST way to do this, is to work on a song and/or melody that you already KNOW!
I mean a melody that you can sing or hum effortlessly.
Let's take JINGLE BELLS as a case study.
Everybody should know this melody.
Now listen carefully... you should be able to play this Holiday Song in ANY style, tempo and rhythm. That's right!
I don't care if you want to play it as a Waltz, Tango, Blues, R&B or Ballad. But you have to work out YOUR arrangement.
But remember, your style of playing it will be based on the music you've heard throughout your LIFE!
I know you've heard the expression, "you are what you eat!" It's the same with music, what you listen too is in direct correlation to the style of music you like and WILL PLAY!
People that are from rural areas in America, love Country music!
"It's is what it is!"
If all you listen too is GOSPEL, you will intuitively create a GOSPEL style of playing Jingle Bells. If you all you listen too is Blues, you'll probably play it in a Blues style!
My point here is that what you create on the piano, will be based on your social and cultural experiences.
That being said, I've attached a "lead sheet" for the song, in the Key of C Major.
Now, remember... once you determine the style in which you want to play the song, that will help you design your left hand "rhythm" accompaniment pattern.
Just give it a try... and I guarantee, you will know what you need to practice!
To your success,
Ron
