balance your light and substance

Dear Friend, here's an article I just wrote on achieving balance between your 'light' and your 'substance'. To unsubscribe from these mailings, simply click on the link at the bottom of the page. Is Life Too Heavy Or Too Light? Or - "Why We Feel 'Not Good Enough', And What To Do About It" Every one of us has a certain amount of substance, and a certain amount of light. We get our substance primarily from our soul, and we get our light primarily from our spirit. Soul is alive in you right now, providing you with the substance, the matter, the 'mattering' of life. Your spirit, completely separate from your soul, gives you the light - the light of spirit. Every one of us has both the substance of soul and the light of spirit. What often happens, however, is that one or the other predominates - and we lose our balance between light and substance. Those with too much light (in relation to the substance) feel they're not good enough because they can't achieve a certain idealized self. They have this image - this concept - of how they ought to be - of how they *should* be - but they can't achieve it. They also hold an image of an ideal world which doesn't really exist. Because they aren't measuring up to some imagined standard, they feel 'not good enough'. Those with too much substance in relation to the light also feel they're not good enough, but for a different set of reasons: they've failed; they're basically a bad person; they're riddled with pain. They *know* they're not good enough, and their past proves it. Those with more light become judgmental in a 'light' sort of way - "Well, I guess I'm just more evolved than you are." Those with more substance hold dark judgments - "I hate myself and I hate the world." Those with more light become sabotaged by their own dark shadow. Because they won't admit a dark side of them even exists, that muted voice of their own negativity must express itself out in the world. Other people and 'outside circumstances' can interrupt the best-laid plans of those with more light. Those with more substance are all too aware of their dark shadow. They 'know' what a scum they are. Nobody out in the world has to tell them. Rather than deny their own negativity, they embrace it whole-heartedly. Both groups of people lack integrity - meaning they won't make the space for the 'whole' of themselves. Those with more light won't admit to having a dark shadow - the part of you which holds all those negative qualities you deny having. Those with more substance won't admit to having a light shadow - the part of you which holds all those positive qualities that you deny having. Obviously we each have both a dark shadow and a light shadow. Do you find yourself denying one or the other? Do you believe you don't have a mean bone in your body, or do you know all-too-well how mean you can be? Those with more light won't admit to their dark side because then they'll never reach their idealized self. They *must* cling to that glimpse of their light shadow they've seen - even though they become blinded by that light and try to become that light, rather than integrating their light and dark sides. Those with more substance believe their light side is fleeting, at best, and if they sense it at all, well - it was just a fluke, a chance occurrence. They don't *really* hold goodness and beauty inside, since they're so beaten down by the mud and the mattering that becomes all too real. Those with more light are great at creating. They always can come up with something new - new ideas, new plans, new visions - but they have trouble creating the space for anything new, because they just won't release their past. They can't destroy what needs to be destroyed. Conversely, those with more substance are quite adept at destroying. They can dig through that past like a kid in a sandbox. They can't get enough of that past (bad as it is) and will even create new problems to resemble the old ones that do fall away. But they just can't create themselves being a good person. Those with more light often become depressed and filled with dread (the imminent threat of non-being). And of course they always live in a state of potentia. "Someday, someday, someday..." Those with more substance often feel guilty and indebted. They experience a sense of stagnation because they feel they're not getting anywhere in life. "I've wasted so much time..." Too much substance in relation to the light. Too much light in relation to the substance. Of course, you have both light and substance. But are they balanced? Where do you fall? Which pile to you find yourself in? Neither one exists as right or wrong. It's simply a question of balance, like so many other things in life. Seek the balance. You don't have to give up what you already have. Just add more of whichever is lacking. Those with more substance often are the 'earth' people or the 'water' people, while those with more light are usually 'fire' people or 'air' people. My element is earth, and I often find I have too much substance in relation to the light. Life can be just a little too heavy, a little too real. The problems of the past seem to never leave, and nobody needs to tell me what a horrible rotten person I am. I already know it. So, to balance, I need to find the light of fire or the light of air. I can either imagine myself stepping into the element of fire to burn off that pain and that past, or I can let myself be lifted by the element of air - to rise above all that heaviness. If you find yourself on the other side, with more light, seeking a fantasy that doesn't exist while strongly denying you even *have* a dark side - then you achieve balance by going into the earth, or into the dark waters. Imagine yourself sinking into the earth to get in touch with the substance of your soul. Or enter the dark waters of your soul. Know your tendency. Recognize it and then acknowledge it by feeling that imbalance as strongly and completely as you possibly can. Think about and feel those characteristics you possess. Next, forgive yourself for that lack of balance - knowing you were only doing what you thought was right. Finally, seek the balance. Seek the fire or the air if you have more substance. Sink into the earth or the water if you have more light. Find the balance, and watch your life change.
