The Next Step For Atkins Nutritionals: Bankruptcy

Atkins Nutritionals filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy recently. The company pointed to the death of its founder, heavy debt, and a drop in low-carb dieting as the causes.

Sources outside the company also cited additional reasons, including confusion among consumers about the "net carbs" concept, and the fact that many people thought Atkins Nutritionals' products didn't taste very good.

When Robert Atkins, the company's founder, died in 2003, it may have contributed to Atkins Nutritionals' difficulties, as they lost their most public face and zealous advocate. In addition, the trend in low-carb dieting has sharply declined, from a peak of 9 percent of American adults in 2004 to only 2.2 percent last month.

[Rob's Note:] I did Atkins for about 6 months a couple of years ago.  Why? because everyone was asking me how I could possibly fit my Sunrider Whole Food program around this "latest diet nonsense", so I figured I get a look at the inside picture about it.

Result:  got off it after I learned what I needed to know and have not looked back.
