    The Gift without work

Last week I think I talked to 5 people who had done ALMOST all the work necessary to get a job.  Still, they couldn't get a job even though they had a lot of native talent, schooling and certifications.

In today's environment you have to prove yourself BEFORE you get hired.

They were good programmers who didn't have examples of the work they had done.

I helped a high school junior with no degrees or certifications get a job in programming.  He had done some amazing work on his own just because he loves programming.  He brought it to his interview.  He was hired into a team of college graduates.

Another programmer is being interviewed this week and courted by 3 other companies.  He quit a highly respected school to get a degree in game programming somewhere else.  He made big sacrifices to get experience during his schooling.  He did more than just take classes.  He's very talented, but many people are as talented as he is. He can point to what he did. He worked for free where necessary, finished projects, accepted low wage jobs, and put together a portfolio.

Believe it or not, the same thing can apply to anyone.  A geologist with a degree and no experience can go get work on an oil rig as a roughneck.  An accountant can help out a friend with a home business and become her free company accountant.  An engineer can get a job fixing cars or running a machine shop lathe.

The trick is to get experience related to what you want to do.  In today's environment that is how you set yourself apart so you can eventually get the job you really want.
