  Focus, aim, get a job

  • In a book about Echo Sackett, she makes the comment, "I haven't missed what I was shooting at since August.  And then I hit what I was aiming at, but it was the wrong thing."

One of the most important job search hints I ever read was in Field And Stream magazine.  The author basically said, "If you are looking for an elk in the woods, don't look for the whole elk.  Instead, look for the smooth curve of it's neck or haunches.  Look for the branching of its horns.  You rarely see the whole elk at first, but if you look for parts of the elk, the rest of him will come into view."

When you are looking for a job, you have to do the same thing.  Currently less than 20% of jobs are being filled off of job boards.  Less than 5% of jobs are being filled by independent recruiters like me.

So start looking to see parts of a job.  For instance, we had a local company announce that it is building a new warehouse.   They will need a project manager, supervisors, and an auditor for the job.  But they will probably get enough applications without advertising.

A bank just announced that they just hired a new commercial lender.  Guess what, he came from another bank and there is a hole there that has to be filled.  You can call him up to congratulate him, and just happen to ask where he came from.

Another company just announced record profits.  That means they are expanding their production.  They may not advertise any jobs, but they need to hire people.  Call up the head of sale and congratulate him.  And you may also mention you are a salesperson too.

Be a great shot like Echo Sackett.  And learn, like she did, that you have to make sure you really see what it is you are shooting at.  There are jobs out there.  But you may just see an ear flick, or the round haunch of the job.  Look closely.  There is a job for you if you can just see it.

I'm preparing for A Day Of Learning.  That will be done every 2nd Tuesday of the month.  I'll give 3 - 90 minute presentations.  One will be on management and change,  another on sales, a third on effective hiring.  Every other Tuesday I will be doing practice classes which I will announce on www.dilts.us and www.howtoreallygetagreatjob.com .  I'll also tweet them.  Everyone is welcome.
