I need to stop watching the news.

There is so much happening, and I need to focus on getting The Greater Georgia Business Expo behind me!

As far as the news is concerned, it made me think about PR and results. In particular what is happening in the election process. This week, my article is an editorial.

I am also including several articles that have been contributed by others from as far away as Russia! AtlantaEvent.com is positioning well in the search engines these days and things like this prove that we are.

Also, you may have noticed to the left that we will be giving away 800 AtlantaEvent.com Advantage cards at The Greater Georgia Business Expo with a free one year subscription. If you currently have a paid subscription to the Advantage Card, go into your Paypal account and cancel that subscription. It is now free to you for the next whole year!

So with that said, have a great week!

One other thing, AtlantaEvent.com does not publish articles that have been culled from article archive web sites. All of the articles featured have been submitted either by the authors themselves or their agent. If you repeat a lie over and over does it become the truth? Well not really, it is just often accepted as the truth by those who hear it repeatedly.

Lately the news industry is consumed by the Swift Boat Controversy. You have probably heard of it. On one side, over 60 people have accused one of lying. On the other side, two people have stepped up to defend. Which side do you believe?

I would suggest that you believe the side that aligns with what you believe to be reality. Is it reality or simply what you want to believe?

I have been thinking about this for some time. Why do we choose to believe a lie even when there are facts to disprove it? Here is an example of what I believe is happening.

Johnny goes to school and gets in trouble. The principle calls and reports to Johnny's parents that he hit Billy in the back of the head with a rock, and Billy had to get stitches. Johnny's parents say "are you sure it was Johnny who threw the rock? He would never do something like that! "

Well Johnny's parents love him and have never seen Johnny act like that . They find it hard to believe that their nice quiet son could do such a thing. Have you ever seen the interview on TV of the neighbor who is being asked "did you know that your neighbor was a serial killer?" and they respond that "he was such a nice polite young man who never caused any trouble."

Are these opinions based on the facts, or are they based on feelings?

Was that example confusing? Well here is a very plain one. If it were to rain today, I would be happy because I feel that my lawn and garden need the rain. On the other hand, you might feel sad because you love sunny days.

Your reality is influenced by your feelings. It is that simple.

In the Swift Boat controversy, have your feelings influenced what you believe? Have you investigated the facts that are available or do you even care? Have you chosen a side based on how you feel? What is YOUR reality?

I am not asking you to believe what I believe. I am simply asking you to now compare this to your everyday life. Is it good? Is it bad? Is it based on facts or is it based on how you feel and if it is based on feelings can you manipulate those feelings to change your reality?

I believe that you can, and I have experienced the end result of changing my feelings to change my reality and to improve my quality of life.

As far as the Swift Boat controversy is concerned, you have already decided where you stand. So have I. The biggest question is was our decision based on the facts as we know them or our feelings?

As always, I am interested in your feedback and opinions.

  Rules for Achieving Online Success

By Nowshade Kabir

Editor's Note:

Although the title of this article refers to Online Success, this article addresses universal success principles.

The Internet brought a great deal of benefit to our life. Access to a lot of free and useful information is probably, one of the most important of them. However, this wealth of free information has also become a problem to some extent.

You started to spend a little too much time on the Internet. For you email, chat rooms, messenger services along with aimless web browsing dominate a substantial portion of your workday. As a result you feel that you are losing control of your working life, your productivity is decreasing and you are accomplishing far less in a day than you are capable of. This makes you frustrated, miserable and negative. What to do? How to get out of this mess?

According to Brian Tracey, a renowned self-help guru, Principle of Control is one of the most important factors of life. This principle ascertains that you feel positive about yourself to the degree to which you feel you are in control of your life. The same way, you feel negative about yourself to the degree to which you feel that you are controlled by external forces.

The thing is if you don’t feel positive about yourself, it would be impossible for you to achieve success. This means to become happy and successful you need to regain control of your life. The following suggestions will help you achieve this:

Set Goals

Goals are like road maps. If you are planning to visit a new place and don’t take a road map of the place with you, most certainly, you will have difficulties in finding your way around. A written goal will give you a clear idea of what exactly you would like to achieve. Goals also give you a sense of control over your direction.

Goals should be specific: I would like to become a better online businessman is not a goal. It’s a mere statement! Goals should have clear, substantiated and detailed targets!

Goals should be measurable: I would like to get 100 thousand new visitors to my site within six months is a specific and measurable goal.

Goals should be realistic: I want my site to become like Yahoo!® within one year is probably an unrealistic and impossible goal. If your goal is too easy to achieve or an impossible one to reach, you will soon lose interest in it. Make sure that your goal is high but attainable.

Set a deadline: Each of your goals should have specific deadlines for their achievement.

Create a detailed plan of action: List every action you have to take in order to achieve a certain goal.

List obstacles: Write down all the obstacles that you might encounter on your way to reaching this goal. Each time you overcome an obstacle from your list, you will feel good about yourself. This will work as motivation for you to continue.

Make Lists

While developing your plan of actions for your goals, make two basic lists, a comprehensive master list and a more specific daily to do list.

The master list is a single ongoing list of all things that you plan to do in order to achieve your goals. It does not matter whether it is a major goal achieving work with a year long continuation or a small urgent task you need to finish today. Whenever you have come up with a task that you have to do, you add it to your master list.

Each evening create a specific daily to do list for the next work day. Make sure that this list is not too long; and all tasks of this list can be finished within the next working day. If some of the tasks, however, remain untouched at the end of the day, just roll them over to the next day’s list.

To use this list effectively you have to distribute your tasks according to their priorities.

Remember Priorities

Since it is impossible to predict whether you will be able to finish all the tasks from your list in one day, and since some of the tasks are more important than others; you should prioritized the tasks according to their importance in achieving your goals.

To develop a priority-based to do list, write all the tasks you are planning to carry out the next day. Go through the list carefully and mark each of them according to their priority: A to be the most important and D to be the least important task of the list. Reconstruct the list according to the assigned priorities.

Start working from task number one on your list and go down accordingly. This priority-based to do list will be able to guarantee the following:

You will know which tasks should be carried out first. You will always have a comprehensive to do list, allowing you to focus on the things that you need to. However, make sure that you don’t have more than three tasks with highest priority. Too many high priority tasks will keep you under stress and will constantly distract you from the job at hand.

Focus on One Thing

To be successful in any field you need to have many qualities. The ability to focus on the tasks of highest priority and continue working on them until you bring them to their logical end is one of the vital skills of success. Many people of mediocre abilities achieved great success thanks to just this one single quality.

Once you have made your to do list and prioritized it, concentrate on one task at a time. No matter what we do, our mind can concentrate on one thing at a time only. If you try to do several things simultaneously, this will only distract you and slow your pace in accomplishing the task with highest priority.

These simple and well-known rules can really do miracles to your life! Try them, you won’t be disappointed!

7 Keys to Running a Successful Business

by Scott Kiser, DDS

Although dentistry may appear to be different than other types of businesses, in reality it is a business and though this article is written from a dentist’s perspective on developing a successful practice, the principles can be used in virtually any business.

I have been in the dental industry for over 20 years and can proudly say I do have a highly successful business, also known as a practice. Over the years, I have learned many things that work in running a business and even more that do not. It is with this in mind that I share the following 7 keys to running a successful business. Regardless of your industry they can apply.

1. Have a vision
One of the most important aspects of running any business is to have a clear vision of what you want that business to be like. What do you want to be known for in the marketplace? What kind of clients do you desire? What level of service do you want to provide? Do you want to be “one among many” or do you want to be considered a leader in your industry?

By answering these and many other similar types of questions, you will gain insight into the direction you can, and should, take your business.

2. Develop a plan that ties into the vision
Once you gain clarity on your vision, you must be willing to develop a plan. Far too often people have an idea of where they want their organization to be, but they fail to put together a usable plan. Take time to map out what needs to be done to achieve your outcomes.

3. Know your market
One of the most important aspects of running any type of business is to know whom your market is. You can’t be all things to all people. Contrary to what some would like to believe, not everyone is his or her market. There is a very astute saying in marketing, “If everyone is your market, then no one is your market.”

The clearer you are on who you are targeting the easier it will be to focus your efforts on reaching those individuals and/or companies.

4. Gain visibility within your market
Take a very focused approach to reaching your market. Just because you have determined who your market it, doesn’t mean you are done. You must now be willing to have a very focused approach to targeting your market. Whether that be through direct mail, advertising, newsletters, informational seminars or any number of methods, you have to be willing and able to keep your name in front of your market.

5. Get your team on board
This is probably one of the most crucial and yet, often most overlooked aspects of running a business. You have to make sure your team knows what is going on. Holding regular staff meetings as a means to keep people informed is a great way to gain the buy in of your team. Additionally, be open to ideas that may come from your team members.

It will be very difficult to achieve your long-term goals if your team members either don’t understand your vision or haven’t bought into it. When you hire people, make sure they understand what you are trying to achieve. Whether you are dealing with new members of the team or seasoned folks, everyone must be willing to be a part of the plan. When they are, you will have a much greater chance for success.

6. Be consistent
Running and marketing a business is an ongoing process. The greatest mistake people make in virtually any industry is they try something once and expect instant results. You must be in this for the long haul. Sure, with some of your marketing strategies you will get instant, or direct, response. However, with most approaches, it is more like the tortoise and the hare. In the short-term it looks like the hare is in the lead, but the reality is he is burning himself out and ends up losing to the tortoise who had a consistent and long-term vision.

7. Realize – you change lives
One of the things I most love about dentistry is I know I change lives. I recognize this beyond a shadow of a doubt. When my patients are able to obtain the smile they once only dreamed of because of what I did for them, I know I am doing my life’s work.

With most people, regardless of the industry you are in, in some way you do change lives. If you know that, your job is very rewarding.

Think about the end user of your product or service. What is it about what you provide that makes a difference for them? If you don’t know, ask your customers. You may be pleasantly surprised. It is in the answers you can become clearer and clearer as to your vision and the benefits you bring to others through the services you provide.
