Dear Friend of America's Survival, Inc.:

We need your immediate help. The famous farm of Whittaker Chambers, who blew the whistle on the communist penetration of our government and exposed Soviet spy Alger Hiss, is in jeopardy. You may remember that I visited the farm and his son John Chambers and reported on the historical significance of this location. Please read my report.

Mauricio Tamargo of the Freedom and Historic Preservation Foundation, which is dedicated to the preservation of Whittaker Chambers farm, tells me that Carroll County, where the farm is located, is still considering a water project that would destroy part of the property. A decision could be taken soon. Please act as soon as possible and copy me on your messages.

He says, "I know we are all busy with our own worries and responsibilities but could you please take a moment to write to the Carroll County Commission and ask them to change their reservoir plans.  Respectfully ask the county to please not flood or harm any portion of Whittaker's farm.  Please send all comments on the draft Water Resources Element, whether general or specific can be directed to Carroll County Commission, Att. Brenda Dinne, by e-mail to bdinne@ccg.carr.org  or by mail at 225 North Center Street, Room 204, Westminster MD 21157.   Please write your comments soon possible as I am not sure if there is a deadline."

   I respectfully ask the County not to destroy any part of Whittaker Chambers' farm. Please find a link to my report on my visit to the farm and my meeting with Whittaker Chambers' son. There is so much history involved with this farm.  This is the site of the former pumpkin patch where the pumpkin papers were stored by Whittaker Chambers. The pumpkin papers, stolen and secret State Department documents given to Chambers by Hiss and hidden in the form of microfilm in a hollowed-out pumpkin at Chambers' farm, were absolute proof of State Department official Alger Hiss's role as a Soviet spy

   My report said, John Chambers said he considers himself a farmer, not a political person, but does have to spend some of his time fighting attempts by the County Commissioners to seize part of his farmland in order to build a dam and a lake for development purposes. He vowed never to give up that fight.

  I am distressed that this fight continues. Please respect the historical value of this important property.
