Greetings Friend, we interrupt our regularly
scheduled newsletter to bring you this
special AECNU Internet & Computers
announcement :-)
Synopsis:
Our primary server (Group 1) has a hard drive
and/or hard drive controller problem and the
data is currently being transferred to a
brand new server - in which when the data
transfer is complete the primary server will
be taken offline for several minutes while
the new primary server is put in it's place
causing a complete, hopefully very brief
disruption in all services i.e.
minutes
Detailed Technical Account:
For the past couple of days we have been
experiencing what seemed to be ever
increasing performance problems though
intermittent with our primary server and
yesterday late afternoon (30 June 2010) our
programming team notified me of this
continuing phenomenon.
I immediately took appropriate action to
identify the exact problem and notify our
Hardware Engineers in the US with the
evidence - our primary server directs
everything for us including but not limited
to: Hosting both in US and Europe (Group 3
partially reliant on DNS from Group 1), Phone
Systems (Group 2 but reliant on DNS from
Group 1), DNS, and much more.
I found that the primary server CPU was
barely working but the Server Load was
extremely high and supplied the following
evidence thereof to the Hardware Engineers in
the US:
Cpu(s):
0.7% us,
0.7% sy, 0.0% ni, 0.0%
id,
98.7% wa,
0.0% hi, 0.0% si
Above shows the Cpu(s) running at
0.7%,
system Idle
0.0%, and an I/O wait state of
98.7%
indicating Hard Drive and/or Hard Drive
Controller Failure.
The engineers replied back that they want to
take the server offline to test the Hard Disk
Drive and when would it be convenient?
Our Reply ..... We are unwilling to tolerate
the performance degradation nor with a
lengthy outage and that we want this cured
without testing the Hard Disk Drive and
Controller of the old server which can be
done later and to prepare the brand new
reserve server for production and transfer
the data - that is what is happening right
this moment - we will deal with the old
server later and I do not want this to drag
into the 4th of July holiday nor risk
complete server failure.
There you have it ..... right now (starting
at approx. 2:30 AM EST) the data transfer is
taking place and sometime today the server
will go down completely for some minutes
while the old server is swapped out of the
group and the new one is swapped in.
We expect most services to be working
correctly immediately and anticipate some
others will need to be tweaked to include
missing perl modules.
I will be personally monitoring and
supervising the process from the NOC in
Europe and not leaving until everything is
how it should be.
I apologize for the inconvenience, ordered a
speedy replacement, and wish all of you GREAT
4th of July Holiday and/or weekend :-)
To YOUR success!
Sincerely,
Joseph Anderson CEO, AECNU Internet &
Computers
PS: a
special thanks to all of you whom contacted
us letting us know what you were seeing from
outside our network ..... including but not
limited to Paul Pavel, Hans Castiglioni, Eric
Edwards, and others - THANK YOU!
