REAL Service Providers .....

You won't get this in the states ..... it is 10 minutes after midnight and I started having problems with my Internet Service and called my provider - and they will have somebody here in twenty minutes to check what the problem is and that as always there is no charge.

America and it's giant corporate monopolies have certainly lost their way or basically do not give a crap.

We ourselves are a provider in the US but only have the choice to send our DSL Signal over the lines of whom has control of those lines be it AT&T, Verizon, or SBC.

It may take them a couple days to get someone to check out a connection problem or complete outage and this is not the first time in eight years that I have called my provider and twenty minutes later they were here - even on a Sunday morning! and I have never been charged for a service call - NEVER.

Here in Sofia I have my choice of over 30 different providers of both cable TV and Internet connectivity - In the states you have one choice for a DSL Provider (it still goes over the monopoly lines) or one cable provider - that's it. The real choice is in who's billing you, the terms of billing, and who is taking care of tech support, but other then that it is the same ole same old.

This leads to high prices and anti-competition with an illusion of no monopoly but the bottom line is that it is a true monopoly.

No? Can I run our DSL signal over taxpayer funded phone lines over AT&T phone lines without their assistance or interference - NO!

For things to truly improve in the United States its needs home grown competition to include currency and Government - otherwise you find yourself at the mercy of the incumbent monopolist and/or Politician.

I have never been happier in my life getting away from that prison, not realizing what control and utter Bullshit, lies, and jumping through hoops they (Government and Corporations) were forcing upon my life and family .....

Canada: New Online Spying Bills Being Presented This Fall

The European bank run continues... Now spreading to insurance companies

$16 muffins, $5 meatballs: Audit finds outrageous spending at Justice Department meetings

From Nebulous:

OpenMedia reports that, this Fall,  the government is trying to “sneak”  a set of “Lawful Access” bills that’s designed to create a registry of citizens’ private electronic data and even dictate how online services and Internet-enabled devices are designed and manufactured so that the government can have easier access to private data.

The government wants to be able to access all your private data as well as anything that pertains to your activities online without a warrant or judicial oversight and they want to make taxpayers foot the bill to have their privacy invaded.

Nice…

Reading the OpenMedia.ca site is engaging but depressing at the same time as it shines a spotlight on the activities of the incumbent telecomm corporations and the government that threaten to further erode the state of Canada’s Internet industry and infrastructure.

While the world advances, the encumbent telecomm corporations and the government want to move Canada ever more backwards.   It’s frustrating.

It also shows how the regulatory body designed to protect the interests of citizens and the health of the telecomm industry in Canada, the CRTC,  as they have ruled that billing practices will remain the same and that there is enough competition in Canada’s Internet industry—  which is ludicrous in light of the fact that the incumbents like Rogers and Bell hold all the keys to the gates...

From Bloomberg:

Lloyd's of London, concerned European governments may be unable to support lenders in a worsening debt crisis, has pulled deposits in some peripheral economies as the European Central Bank provided dollars to one euro-area institution.

"There are a lot of banks who, because of the uncertainty around Europe, the market has stopped using to place deposits with," Luke Savage, finance director of the world's oldest insurance market, said today in a phone interview. "If you're worried the government itself might be at risk, then you're certainly worried the banks could be taken down with them."

European banks and their regulators are trying to reassure investors and customers that lenders have enough capital to withstand a default by Greece and slowing economic growth caused by governments' austerity measures. Siemens AG (SIE), European's biggest engineering company, withdrew short-term deposits from Societe Generale SA, France's second-largest bank, in July, a person with knowledge of the matter said yesterday.

Lloyd's, which holds about a third of its 2.5 billion pounds ($3.9 billion) of central assets in cash, has stopped depositing money with some banks in Europe's peripheral economies, Savage said, declining to name the countries or institutions.

From Bloomberg:

U.S. Justice Department agencies spent too much for food at conferences, in one case serving $16 muffins and in another dishing out beef Wellington appetizers that cost $7.32 per serving, an audit found.

"Some conferences featured costly meals, refreshments, and themed breaks that we believe were indicative of wasteful or extravagant spending," the Justice Department’s inspector general wrote in a report released today.

The inspector general reviewed a sample of 10 Justice Department conferences held between October 2007 and September 2009 at a cost of $4.4 million, a period that included the administrations of Republican George W. Bush and Democrat Barack Obama. The Justice Department spent $73.3 million on conferences in fiscal 2009, compared with $47.8 million a year earlier, according to the report.

The muffins were served at an August 2009 conference of the Executive Office for Immigration Review and the beef Wellington was offered at a February 2008 meeting hosted by the Executive Office for U.S. Attorneys. A March 2009 conference of the Office on Violence Against Women served Cracker Jack, popcorn and candy bars at a single break, costing $32 per person, according to the report.

$5 Swedish Meatball

The report is a follow-up to one from 2007 that found the Justice Department had few controls to limit the costs of conference planning, food...

Why Ron Paul could be the next President of the United States

From The Daily Capitalist:

... Sometimes, perhaps once in a few generations, a nation can undergo what a mathematician or physicist would call a "phase change." The classic example of such a thing is a pile of sand. Every grain you add makes the pile slightly steeper and slightly higher without moving any of the other grains inside the pile, until eventually one grain is added that causes an avalanche of sand down the sides of the pile, moving thousand of grains and changing the shape of the pile.

... We cannot see past a phase change. I don’t know if the U.S.A. will have undergone one at the time of the 2012 election, but the necessary conditions for one are all in place, as far as I can tell.

One has to reach back a good way in American history for a time of such rapidly rising sentiment that not only are our leaders unable even to think of real solutions to the problems of greatest concern (rather than just making expedient changes at the margin), but also that the prevailing political and economic system is structurally incapable of delivering any long-term solutions in its current form.

The sheer range and interconnectedness of the problems that the nation faces are such that any permanent solution to any one of them will require profound systemic change that will necessarily upset many economic, political and cultural equilibria. And that is nothing more than a definition of a national phase change.

The average American may not know what is to be done, but she can sense when the system has exhausted all its possibilities...
