WordPress Security

One of the big topics lately has been the securing and security of WordPress.

Though we have reviewed several of the products out there regarding the security of WordPress ..... none of them covered the easiest and largest hole in the WordPress installation - and that is the wp-config.php file itself.

This file contains the information for accessing the database including user name and password and it can be READ if it is not secured!

This file is also very easy to secure from prying eyes by simply adding a statement to the .htaccess file of the root or beginning folder of the WordPress installation.

The following statement when added to the above mentioned .htaccess file, towards the top of the .htaccess file, will prevent all those from the outside from accessing or reading the information contained therein:

"Less then bracket" files wp-config.php"Greater then bracket"
order allow,deny
deny from all
"Less then bracket"/files"Greater then bracket"

NOTE: simply replace the quoted text above with the indicated less then or greater then bracket which is being stripped by our auto responder :-(

Be careful when copying and pasting the above text being sure that it does not contain any added html characters. You may want to paste it to notepad first and then copy and paste it into the .htaccess file to insure no html characters are included.

and that my friends and is how very easy it is to plug up and secure one of the greatest security risks to a WordPress based website or blog :-)

White House: We lied about bin Laden

Euro surging against the dollar

Federal Reserve president: We must end the stimulus now

Politico is reporting that the White House is re-spinning the events surrounding the killing of Osama bin Laden:

... At a Pentagon briefing earlier in the day, a senior defense official said bin Laden used a woman as a human shield so he could fire shots. "He was firing behind her," the official said.

In another background briefing early Monday morning, a senior administration official also said bin Laden put up a fight. "He did resist the assault force. And he was killed in a firefight," the official said.

However, during a background, off-camera briefing for television reporters later Monday, a senior White House official said bin Laden was not armed when he was killed, apparently by the U.S. raid team.

Another White House official familiar with the TV briefing confirmed the change to POLITICO, adding, "I'm not aware of him having a weapon."

From Bloomberg:

The euro rose against the dollar, approaching its highest level since December 2009 on speculation European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet will signal further rate increases after policy makers meet tomorrow.

The shared currency rose versus most of its major counterparts as European services and manufacturing growth accelerated in April. New Zealand's dollar dropped to a two-week low on the biggest net outflow of residents in more than 10 years. The dollar fell against the euro before a report forecast to show company hiring slowed in April, encouraging the Federal Reserve to keep borrowing costs low.

"The ECB has nailed its anti-inflation colors firmly to the mast, and the Fed hasn't even got around to starting yet," said Steven Barrow, a currency strategist at Standard Bank Plc in London. "This euro rally won't extend too far if the ECB isn't as hawkish as the market expects...

From Bloomberg:

Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City President Thomas Hoenig said the central bank should begin withdrawing its monetary stimulus as part of efforts to quell concerns about inflation in the U.S.

"I can't go anywhere in my district and have people not ask me about inflation" in items including gasoline, groceries and paper products, Hoenig said to reporters today in Washington. The Fed needs to "calm inflationary fears" by raising interest rates, and "if we don't do that, then I think they will build over time," he said.

Last week's increased inflation projections by central bank officials "trouble" Hoenig, and higher prices may only be "transitory if monetary policy adjusts" through a tightening, he said. Hoenig, who opposed all eight Fed monetary-decisions in 2010, favoring tighter credit, reiterated his call to start raising the benchmark interest rate to 1 percent and then further as the economy ...
